This classic dance track from 1989
has been refurbished for the 21st century. It’s a silky,
glittering swatch of Latin throb that deserved its dance floor
success the first time round and should return to favor thanks
to these two expert tribute mixes.
The Kayestone Tribute Mix of “Sueño
Latino” opens with the calls of tropical birds soon interrupted
with driving snyths, percolating beats and breathy Italian and
Spanish lyrics. You also hear a woman breathing hotly into your
ears through your headphones. Yo quiero.
Bushwacka! then plants a bottom heavy beat upon
the track and adds some reverb to the vocals. He sends a deep
whine sweeping repeatedly through the track, too, giving it a
good late-90s club feel.
This single also includes a three-and-a-half minute
radio edit of the Kayestone Tribute Mix. The other tracks are
more than double that length and also more likely to transport
you—probably to Ibiza or Rio de Janeiro, I guess.
The song has lived a few lives. The earlier version
of “Sueño Latino” was crafted by the Italian
group of the same name based on an even earlier (1984) German
synthesizer classic “E2-E4” by Manuel Göttsching.
“Sueño Latino” sounds so much sexier, doesn’t
it? It means “Latin Dream” and it’s good to
see it back. It topped the dance charts in Europe it’s first
time through and is now repeating history. Ricky Martin eatcha
heart out.
