Privacy + Design
For the past decade, I’ve developed a specific interest in privacy as in important consideration in the practice of experience design.
Users, or, more importantly, people have become more and more concerned about the privacy and security of their personal information online. Though my interest can be traced back earlier, I began researching the topic of privacy by design about a decade ago as I became increasingly involved in the global internet freedom community. In 2018 I earned a Certificate in Privacy & Data Security at Georgetown University.
Design for Privacy
My book Design for Privacy will be available from Rosenfeld Media November 10th 2025.
My original article of this topic was published on UX Collective: Designing for Privacy in an Increasingly Public World. That piece evolved into a presentation, and now, I’m happy to announce, a book Design for Privacy now available on Rosenfeld Media’s site and many other online booksellers.
Design for Privacy was featured by renowned global privacy expert Daniel Solove as one of his “Notable Privacy, AI, and Security Books for 2025.” Kirkus reviewed it as “a compelling, user-friendly guidebook to the value of privacy in user experience design.”
I’ve written and presented regularly on this topic, addressing audiences at the Brooklyn Product Design Meetup, Design Museum Week, Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE), Medium Day, OpenWater, Publicis Sapient, the University of Maryland, and the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. I debuted a poster on the topic at the Information Architecture Conference (IAC) in Seattle in 2024.
I have collaborated with companies on improving the privacy of their digital experiences and would be happy to work with yours or to present on the topic to your group or organization.
Reach out if you’d like to collaborate on this important topic.
